Message: Hi. I am very concerned about all these crimes that have occurred at the different resorts in Mexico. Today, 12/03/18 I read an article about rapes occurring in Jamaica involving American tourists. The article was from the Detroit Free Press dated 11/30/2018 written by Tresa. The results are the same no help from the resorts other than paying for your trip after you sign a nondisclosure agreement. I believe a lot of pressure needs to be put on the U.S. State Department that has not done anything to Pressure the Mexican authorities to put pressure on the resorts to assist the tourists of crime in Mexico. I am sure the U.S. State Department has not done anything in Jamaica. Trip Advisor also does not publish any letters written to them from U.S. victims in Jamaica. It is terrible that the U.S. Goverment has not done anything with this dilemma.

Message: I married a Mexican-American in the U.S. She would be considered a white Mexican. I am tall Irish-American blue eyes. About the most obvious Gringo ever. We decided to move to Cancun in 2014, her for family and me for adventure. I am a boat mechanic she a high level bartender. All of the stories posted here are true and understated.. Most are intentional druggings not black market moonshine alcohol. She warned me that that the Mexicans are the most racist people in the world. Which I didn't believe before but now I do. The druggings are a planned part of management and bartenders. Management gets a referral from the hospitals and doctors, 10 percent of small bills and 5 per cent of large bills. Bartenders get a small percent of this fee plus an opportunity to rape the women and rob the men. Cancun appeals to the drinking/alcoholic vacation crowd. This is the perfect set-up for the 90 percent of the Cancun Mexicans that are criminals. The victims think it is their fault, for drinking too much, jet lag or Mexican trot. This is where the blaming them comes in. The rejection by the hotel for bad behavior is part of the plan. The victim must believe it is his fault for being a drunk.
I only drank beer in bars. I required the bartender to bring it unopened. I had a bottle opener with me. I never left my beer alone. I took it to the bathroom and pool with me. The thing causing the insane behavior is methamphetamine, plus roofie. The main goal is to put you in the hospital to get the fee not to kill you. the other goals rape the women, kick you out of the hotel and keep your advance and rob your money. Mexico is extremely dangerous and should be Level 3 or 4 not 2 on the US state dept. travel advisories. Last year we moved to Costa Rica where things are OK. I will post more on Mexican racism soon.

Message: I recently read the story about your son, Nolan, and I just had to send a short note to let you know how utterly disgusted I was reading the ordeal.The fact that there was an actual nurse there trying to help and he was literally held back and restrained?! I was choked up reading it. I can only imagine the reality of a parent having to come to grips with the fact. Words mean nothing, but I was moved to say...something.
I know time will never heal and nothing will bring Nolan back, but bless you for having the strength to continue to advocate and essentially re-live the tragedy by working to educate and help others. I know it's an effort to make sure Nolan's story and life can save another..and trust that I'm sure it has! But still your bravery and love are nothing short of heroic and bless you for everything you are doing and the awareness you continue to spread.
I was especially drawn because my wife and I have been down there a few years in a row for concerts that take place in la playa every year. Side note- I've fallen extremely ill every year and sworn off Mexico, but chalked it up to "the water" and now I'm not so sure it wasn't tainted liquor. Regardless, I was humbled by how easily this could have been me, my wife, my friend(s) or ALL OF THE ABOVE!
May you get some semblance of peace from this site and all that you do. I'm so very, very sorry for your loss. There was zero reason for it to ever have happened, but thank you for advocating and continuing to raise awareness, provide an outlet for other families to cope/share their stories and for saving lives.

Cloud9 Adventures holds numerous concerts/events down there every year and I've already fwd'd the story, site and links and asked they please reconsider holding events down there, or at the very least post this prominently on their site. The bottom line is that Mexico is dangerous and corrupt and the best advice is not to go there. Message: I'm so grateful for this website and so sick of places like Snopes and others trying to vilify the victims. For anyone doubting the validity of people's claims, I pose you this: I am a life long resident of Las Vegas... (no, that's not as risque as it sounds, I teach Sunday School, I walk my dog to Starbucks and the Strip is a eyesore drenched in smoke, alcohol and insane tourists that I only visit on rare occasion when my addiction go gourmet food and wine forces me past the lunatics) In my city, countless idiots reenact the plot to "The Hangover" daily, shy accountants and librarians don club clothes and platform heels (irrespectively of gender at times ), livers are drown in alcohol by the thousands per minute and even the most subdued person becomes an insane caricature of a Kardashian on a bad TMZ report... This happens daily, hourly, nightly. Thankfully, what happens in Vegas doesn't really stay in Vegas and they do in fact go home (and return to their "normal lives", albeit sans a few liver and brain cells). I pose this to you... Bar fights, club disturbances, squawking drunk females, squawking drunk males, security involvement and police action are quite the norm here but you never hear stories of entrapment, corruption, endangerment and extortion. I get that people are trying to balance the facts but I'll tell you with all certainty... Where there's smoke there's fire... Mexico is unsafe, corrupt and unscrupulous. People's lives are taken, wrecked and traumatized daily over circumstances that also happen in places like Vegas, South Padre Island, Daytona, Lake Havasu, you name it but the us stories don't end up at all like the stories of Mexico.
Mexico's the problem not the tourists. I used to love Mexico. I could be on a tropical beach in exquisite luxury in 2 hours for pennies compared to anywhere else... We went often. Then the gangs and drug lords became so powerful that our local Mexican friends told us it was not safe. While we miss our friends and worry as well for their safety, we are not dumb enough to ignore the obvious. Maybe someday Mexico will change but right now it's not safe.

Message: After reading the stories of many Americans being assaulted, drugged and financially being taken advantage of. Mexican government I feel plays a big role and not protecting Americans. I did email and write to my congressman, asking to put a law in place that will help protect Americans traveling into Mexico. I was getting ready to book a vacation with my husband and two children to Riviera Maya in February, I'm now going to contact my travel agent and let her know I am not going due to these horrible stories and incidences that have been happening. My heart is broken to think that there is such blatant disregard for human life. I have travelled to Mexico on multiple vacations and have always felt safe, even recommending it to others as a safe travel destination. Message: I've been to Mexico three times, the first time with a Guatemalan lawyer....he knew the system of extortion well and we paid for a few things, but reading these stories it seems this custom of payment has amplified and had steroid injections. The second time I went to a government run resort and I'm guessing it's off limits? The third time was with Mexican Americans who spoke fluent Spanish so I felt very protected. With a column to the right of how many incidents at that location.
I've noticed there are a few resorts that seem to come up frequently in these accounts. If a traveler sees that there are more accounts of tragedy and crime at Resort A and none at Resort B, they will avoid Resort A and it will impact Resort A's bottom line, which would hopefully force them to increase security. You could also list hospitals used, as well, if that information is known. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss and will be sharing this information.

Message: hi there, i read your website and it left me thinking about my experience in mexico. i lived in northern mexico as an artist for at least seven years. when im not busy, i do go out to have a drink. that was my big mistake. i was drugged on three occasions. they put ghb in my drinks. and i know this for a fact because i had a similar experience in the states. i was told they did that alot in the past in northern mexico. the laws in mexico are not really enforced so people do whatever they want to whomever they want. im thankful i got through those experiences without something really bad happening to me. the government of mexico are claiming that they booze is bad. but i think alot of people may have been drugged. i think it's so sick and immoral to do that to someone. and it sent chills down my spine when i read it was out of control in southern mexico. now when im out, i refuse to drink at a bar, or drink and open drink that is not sealed.

My BF was also killed in Cancun, and his story is linked on your website. I strongly urge anyone who will listen not to travel to Mexico. I have tried posting my experience on travel websites such as trip adviser, and was horrified to have my comments deleted/removed. Your website is an absolute necessity, since there are very few platforms in which to speak and get this message out to the world. I wish our government would do more to inform the American public. As a school psychologist and war veteran, I can tell you that the most effective resource for bereavement is access to peer support for bereaved survivors. I’ve found much comfort in connecting with those who have had a unique experience and have always been extremely supported by my bf’s family. Just knowing that we are not alone in our experience and realizing that others have experienced something similar is an extreme source of comfort. I believe that Joe’s family feels the same. Shortly after Joe died, his mom, with tears in her eyes, told me that she still wanted to dance at my wedding (Joe and I had been talking about getting married when he came back from his deployment.) I never thought I would find another Joe, and I never did. He can never be replaced. However, life continues and I found a wonderful, compassionate man w ho has been supportive in every way. I married him on June 24, 2017…..Joe’s Mom and Dad were honored guests at my wedding and in lieu of wedding favors my husband and I donated to a charity in Joe’s name. He will always be a part of my life and his love will never be forgotten. That bond of love can never be broken and his memories will live on forever. There is no greater bond of love than that of mother and child….so I know that Nolan is with you. Recently there has been some more coverage of Mexico, but more needs to be done. In the face of tragedy, we are often inspired by acts of kindness and a desire to help and support one another. Your efforts here are a beautiful aspect that embodies this truth. Message: Other than Googling a Resort's name on the Internet, there has got to be a better way for travelers to research incidents & deaths that happen at resorts and cities in Mexico.
It's very upsetting to read that trip advisor and other travel sites do not allow people to submit reviews that include information about accidents and deaths that occur at these hotels and resorts in Mexico and elsewhere in the world. If you had a section on contact information where people could write or call TripAdvisor, Expedia, Etc to have them change their policies that would be helpful. In the meantime would you consider including an interactive list and/or map on your website or special Google Maps link that pinpoints all these negligent resorts?

Message: Maureen, I just saw you and your website on one of our Canadian news channels on TV here in Victoria, BC. First of all, we are SO SORRY for your loss... “Nolan, know that you were loved and are missed by so many. Be forever in peace.” We are so sorry for EVERYONE’S loss here that have shared their difficult stories with all of us.
When I was 16 travelling with my mom & dad in Taxco, Mexico City, Puebla and finally in Puerto Vallarta, we were pulled over by the "Federales" (Mexico's Federal Police) for NO REASON AT ALL other than being naïve tourists driving in a near-luxury rental car. The two cops approached our car - one on each side - then aimed their assault rifles at us and demanded that we pay them to avoid being arrested and detained. The fine? The entire contents of all our wallets! This experience, coupled with the fact that two of us got deathly sick with “Montezuma’s Revenge”, was enough to convince us to return home early AND vow that we’d NEVER, EVER return to Mexico again.

Message: Sorry to hear about that young girl who died. I just recently went to Playa Del Carmen twice within the past 9 months. Rented a car both times and drove everywhere. Stayed at three all inclusive resorts and a few small hotels. We went out frequently to eat and drink and never had any problems. We stayed in the Riviera Maya, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel, Cancun and Isla Mujeres. I grew up in Chicago and always drink responsibly. My girlfriend gets a little wild, but we never had any problems.

This trip included myself, my husband, and my 2 kids along with my sister, her husband and their 3 kids. All under the age of 17. 1) We stayed at Iberostar Paraiso del Mar in Feb. 2017. My buddy and his son both felt drugged after drinking at the pool bar.
2) Are similar reports coming in from Punta Cana? We stayed at Iberostar Dominicana in Feb. 2015 and the Stoli vodka was very different at the pool bar after the 3rd day. The Stoli at the lobby bar was fine. There were 10 of us and all agreed there was something foul going on.

Message: One way which could potential help readers is one of two ways.
1) have a list of incident location/resorts for each occurrence in addition to having them listed somewhere so resorts with a history of incidents could be quickly identified.
2) Incorperated location based incidents with them linked on to an interactive google Map. This could also potentially help identify problem resorts and areas.
One of the first things I looked for after reading about stories on your site was a way for me to identify if I had been to a problem resort or area. Thank you for providing this information and service to others including all your efforts in creating awareness.

Message: I lived in Playa de Carmen in the mid 90's. Even then I know for a fact that Mexican authorities were suppressing tourist crime reports and statistics. Rapes from Cancun all down the coast. Even deaths in Cozumel from scuba accidents related to short resort courses. Many tourists simply will not report, say things like rapes, because they will be leaving soon, do not want to return to deal with the prosecutions, dealing with the Mexican authorities who make it difficult on the victims and, then, people at home will never know about what happened. Crimes against tourists on that coast are very, very under-reported. I know that for a fact, rapes especially. Like in cabs going back to a hotel after a night out. Check out about the gas explosion at a large resort. Never reported was the fact it was due to shoddy workmanship. Typical. Oh, I could go on and on. First hand experience. Fact. Message: I read the USA today article which struck home with my wife and I. We have also recently traveled to an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. Just like others we have have ordered drinks from the bartender at the swim up bar. We were fortunate to not be victims of being drugged although my wife did suffer a foot injury slipping on the wet stone. We realized that assistance from resort personnel would come at a cost. I've noticed from the USA Today article, that others are coming forth with their stories and I see common threads in them. One of the best articles that I saw was the mention that in order to truly have an impact, these resorts need to be identified and indexed by date. If tourists stop traveling to their locations, they will self police and weed out the corrupt employees. I encourage you to devote your efforts to this task. I have enjoyed many fun trips to Mexico but at this time, I will travel elsewhere until I see this issue addressed by those that have the means to make a difference. Message: People should also realize their organs are worth a lot of money. Some of the people who went to Mexico and died, and were 'autopsied' could have had organs removed and sold. My dad died in 1997. He was an organ donor. Because he died of a pulmonary embolism (reportedly), which happened ten minutes after a radioactive dye injection, only skin, eye, and bone marrow tissue was harvested. The hospital bill for his six day stay, just for the room, was $11,500. The hospital made $47,000 harvesting and handling his donated tissues. I tricked them into telling me how much the hospital benefited financially from his donation. An organ donor in the US is worth more dead than alive. This was limited tissue harvest with my dad. Consider what a full harvest must be worth. Don't sign your organ donor card in the U.S.. As sure as hell exists and awaits for them, you can bet there are 'doctors' in Mexico harvesting organs from some of the tourists who die there.

Message: I'm writing to offer you some insights; many of which you may already have had, but perhaps a new one. I have no axe to grind; I love Mexico; while harboring no illusions. (My wife is Mexican, so I know the ground.) First, you need to index your site by resort and property. A prospective vacationer should be able to see that X hotel in Y locality had 1, 2, 3+ incidents. That will have an impact on the owners/operators of that property. By the time the impact occurs, the property will be sold and re-branded. Managers will be fired. Nevertheless, owners of other properties will see that if their property is indexed - more than once - it is the kiss-of-death.
Consider whether it's plausible that no one can figure out what is going wrong. Can't be! The people working in any industry almost always see clearly inside and know. The problem occurs when no one sees a compelling interest to fix the problem. Owners of resort properties have a compelling interest in focusing managers' attention on things that are a problem. We vacationers need to make reputation-risk a compelling problem. Look for patterns. E.g., couples at swim-up bars. They both have more than 2 or 3 drinks. Don't seem to be in a larger group, some members of which may be sober and keep an eye on the couple. These are ripe for victimization.
What is the kind-of-attack? E.g., an expensive ride to X hospital. Is a bartender on commission with that hospital? With the Y ambulance company?
E.g., does the couple wake-up in their room? Woman raped; property missing?
What common patterns do NOT appear? E.g., larger groups of people who obviously know one another? Cases where one member of a couple drinks while the other is a teetotaler?
Consider what we - ourselves - the vacationers can do for ourselves? (The US Government has absolutely NO interest in this issue. The Mexican government even less.) WE - the vacationers - are invested; and, we need to get the owners of the properties invested in solving this problem.
Managers aren't much interested in substituting brand liquor for denatured alcohol. If they were, it would be hard for them to control for it. Frankly, it's a lesser problem than a date-rape contamination. Even so, it's an easy lever. Recruit college chemistry majors who like to vacation in Mexico. Have them take random samples of drinks back to their rooms (colleges) and test for contents. I suspect that denatured alcohol could be detected with a simple test. Just about anything with sophisticated spectrometry equipment. When they find something, report it to you for publication. Once resort owners realize that they can't ignore this practice they will implement their own sampling and catch bartenders who are adulterating drinks.
Figure-out and publicize protocols. E.g., vacationing couple Dick and Mary make a point of getting their drinks from 2 different bartenders; and, making a point of getting their respective names. Dick makes a point of thanking Ricardo by name; Mary makes a point of thanking Maria by name. One of these two bartenders may be an adulterator; the other, might not be. Will the adulterator want to feed a tainted drink to Dick when he knows Mary isn't getting drugged as well?
Figure out how to break the association between the perpetrator and the victim. Pool-side service seems acutely risky. If the couple takes alcohol from their room, it will be far more difficult for the room-maintenance crew to target a suitable victim. If Dick makes a point of hailing a male beach waiter while Mary hails a female beach waiter, it's more complicated for the bartender to recruit several waiters to target this couple.
The weak link is the individual employee of the resort. They are easily hired/fired/move-on. Management of each hotel is interested only in firing a suspected employee. Managers need to invest in systems to ensure that a bad employee is not hired by another property.

Message: Unfortunately the bad news about Mexico's history of danger is buried under the landslide of vacation advertising and the greed of the general tourism industry and government. Yes, Mexico is poor and people need work as well as foreign revenue to pay for services.....but the fact is that Mexico is an extremely dangerous country, wether on resort grounds or not....and should be avoided at any cost. The stories told on this site are common tragedies and all to familiar to everyone. But for some reason, people get sucked in by the offer of cheap package vacations and continue to put their lives at risk.
One of my favorited experiences ( I went through Mexico many times on business and consider myself very travel savvy) , was the time I was robbed by the Chief of Police in Cabo San Lucas, many years ago. So don't think the robbery problem is something new. I was a victim of an attempted mugging on the Main Street. I was able to fight my very large attacker off with superior pugilistic skills but was left covered with his blood from head to foot. A patrolling police car passed by within minutes and stopped me.....not surprisingly given I looked like something out of a slasher movie. I speak fluent Spanish and explained that my mugger lay in a vacant lot. They handcuffed me and took me directly to jail. I spent the night in an open cell with a dozen drunks and murderers who spent the night waiting for me to fall asleep as they talked about setting me on fire and didn't know I understood. In the morning the Chief arrived and told me I was in big trouble, that they'd checked my hotel and knew I was alone.....likely a story to frighten me. Having bribed Mexican police and officials many times with the "Mordida" they all ask I got down to business and started negotiating. He asked for $600 USD.....I told him all I had was Travellers cheques, which wasn't true but he didn't obviously know how to trash a hotel room. We agree I would sign six $50 dollar travellers cheques.....which I did. He then asked if aI would like to have lunch with himself and his girlfriend.....because after all we were fellow businessmen....I declined. I knew there was a flight back to San Diego within a hour and caught it with minutes to spare. As soon as I touched US soil I called American Express and told them I'd been robbed and the entire circumstance. The Am Ex operator replied " Sir, you're lucky that's all they took, we hear much worse stories from that region.....Where can we send your refund?" They cancelled the cheques of course and left the thieving Chief with worthless paper.

Message: Hi there. I am writing this in hopes that you will post this on your website because not every part of Mexico is bad. I have read all the stories--only one was from Cozumel. All others have been from Playa, Cancun, etc. My family has been traveling to Cozumel since our son was 7 years old. We have stayed at numerous places-all inclusives, including the Iberostar, condos, villas, etc. We rent cars each time and enjoy eating where the locals eat, which sometimes puts us out on the streets late at night. Never have we felt unsafe. In fact, once we took the ferry over to Cancun to dive the Cenotes and on the way back to the dive center, our dive master got in a wreck because of the rain. We were in an overturned vehicle accident. I had glass all over in my hair and had several lacerations on me which needed to be stiched.The doctor at the hospital never left my room. I feel like I received better care there than I have in the US. All of this to say that...bad things can happen anywhere. What happened to all of these people is awful. It's simple awful. I can't imagine losing my son. But, when you get two of a drink and they are both different colors, that's a red flag. When you get your drink and you notice that it smells weird, that is a red flag. I'm not saying that there was not foul play, I'm just saying lets pick who to blame and not call out all of MEXICO. I love Cozumel and have a very pleasant time every time I go there. The people there are very attentive to my needs and have always been very helpful.

After reading your web site I have some grave concerns because my wife and I recently bought a time share package in the Mexican Vidanta Resort chain. They are "enclosed" high-end resorts and are not all-inclusive facilities. You pay for food and drink within the resort. They currently have six resorts including Riviera Maya, Puerto Penasco (near the Arizona border), Los Cabos-East Cape, Nuevo Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Acapulco. Our primary vacation interest would be the Riviera Maya (between Cancun and Playa del Carmen), and the Nuevo Vallarta resort north of Puerto Vallarta.
My question is, are you aware of the Vidanta Resorts and if so, do you know of any of the kinds of incidents that you have described happening at that resort chain?

Hotel staff spikes your drink, then they injure you to insure a trip to the hospital, then hospital extorts money from you. As long as you (or your loved ones pay up), it doesn't matter if you live or die. They don't care. Perhaps there's even more money in your death when you add in the cost to ship the body home. I heard that many of the all inclusive hotels are cutting their liquor with ether... Those side effects cause the teens to want to rip off their clothes and worst of all, think they can fly... There have been a lot of instances of teens jumping to their deaths off their balconies....I witnessed one in my building many years ago, the fellow was locked out of his 2nd storey apt, then climbed up a telephone pole and tried to jump the 8 feet to his balcony, he fell, and does enroute to hospital... Message: My name is Cris and my family and I stayed at iberoster punta mita August of this year 2016. I was extremely sadden when an Asian man in his 50's suddenly drowned and hotel staff denied it. It's quite disturbing that hotels do not mention how serious the waves can become. They do not always change their flag colors, and even if they do, new vacationers are not aware of this. I believe lifeguards should use binoculars and have a working defibrillator to prevent horrific accidents like this one. The man was dead for some time since his skin color was purple. I wanted to reach out to the family but the hotel refused to give me info. One other piece of information i wish to share is that my sons phone was stolen along with his friends. Cash and clothes were too, while seated near the beach late at night. I brought it up to management and boy did they lie. They lied about there not being cameras and blaming it on vacationers. I am so disappointed and disgusted. I am Mexican American and I treat every employee well, I also tip well and I believe this is part of the reason they didn't mess with us after I told them that I believed security and management were a part of the theft. After reading your stories and going through my own experience I definitely will not be returning to Puerto Vallerta. I really saw the difference how people from Huatulco, Oaxaca are more humbled than at Punta Mita. There are many great people from all over Mexico, yet some do resent Gringos, so be careful and go with large groups and if possible with Spanish speaking people. Since reading all the stories on the website I have not been back to that country. I am sure things like this also happen in other countries what is so sad is that a lot of the Mexicans have been welcoming to me and treated me well and I have always respected them but you have good and bad people all over the world. I want to go to Mexico, but I've been put off by news in recent years of what has happened to other Canadians while there. Without recent news, it's hard to tell if anything has improved. Ijust be consious next time you judge immigrants in US because many of those people don't go to your country only to take your jobs, but intead, they go to find a safer place to live. Some situation just happened here in Chihuahua; a guy beat up his gf until he thought she was dead, he threw her and left her in a park. After some people rescued her and finally the guy was taken to jail since his sister called the police to report him. After three days he was released because the judge did not found any evidence that was him. I love my country but don't think that just because you're a foreigner you have to deal with corruption.

Message: I have been reading the reports of those that have travelled to Mexico. I am glad i did. My son and i were planning a trip to the Tulum region this November. We are now planning a different location. I have travelled quite a bit. My son and I went caveing and climbing in costa rica travelling the country on buses with no issues. Im.a retired Marine so im certainly not easily concerned of controllable issues. But the events that people are reporting are not controllable issues. We will look maybe to go rock climbing and caveing in Croatia or mountains in Patagonia instead. Climbing mountains and rock climbing are controllable issues. I have been visiting Mexico almost on a yearly basis since I was 5 years old and have never encountered any dangerous situation. Message: I worked for a cruise line for a few years in the medical department. route took us to Cozumel once a week. I can vouch for the problems that tourist have in Mexico with medical issues and police. This is not an advertisement for cruise lines, but that is the only way I would visit Mexico. Cruise passengers are protected by the cruise line, so they are treated a little better by the Mexicans. I had a medical emergency in Cozumel and was treated well. Their medical treatment was not up to date, but my life was not in danger.

I came across a website called resortstayvouchers.com and they off a 7 night stay for $500 at a list of all different resorts in Mexico. It's a very intriguing deal and I definitely almost got one. Message: There is a story that is gaining media attention about a former US Marine being jailed in Mexico. He was going through Mexico to Costa Rica and for surfing with his friend. He declared a shotgun at customs and after being allowed through he was arrested and put in prison. Someone in the prison called his family asking for $1800 for his release. There is a lot more to this story on CNN and Fox news. I wanted to let you guys know about this because it's relevant to anyone going to Mexico. The authorities there are corrupt and they are all in on the plan of collecting extortion money. Hopefully this veteran will be freed since a senator recently brought it to the attention of president Obama. The veteran, Jon Hammar, was initially jailed with cartel members and a US congressman had to get him moved to a separate cell. In most countries you expect the authorities to help you but not in Mexico. I hope you post this to let people know even if you aren't vacationing in Mexico. Don't even try to pass through.

Message: Having lived in Cabo san Lucas Mexico on and off for the last few years i can attest that although Cabo happens to be a much safer destination than mainland Mexico, some of the same chronic problems which are pervasive everywhere else in the country, have contaminated this region as well. No money equals no life saving basic care. They don't treat Mexicans that way of course. I heard about this american who had suffered a surfing accident who needed blood donated (he had lost a tremendous amount) but they refused to do this basic life saving procedure as long as several thousands of dollars were not presented to the hospital. I don't know if it was collected in time to save his life.
One time while waiting at the airport leaving Cabo, I met this man. I couldn't help but notice the fact that he looked like he had just gone through the mill. He had a huge gash from one end to the other around his throat, I asked him what had happened to him. He said that on his second day of his vacation, he thought it would be fun to take a sand dune quad driving tour. Only 6 days ago he was driving his quad and lost control due to an unexpected sharp turn. He was thrown off and landed on a barbed wire fence, the kind used to keep prisoners from escaping jails. His ordeal was similar to stories reported on this site.He was left caught in the fence bleeding profusely and went into shock. It took for ever just to get him freed from the fence as no one had pliers. Thankfully there was a hospital nurse who was part of their group who saved his life, she was able to give him first aid and kept him from bleeding to death. He was an inch away from his vena cava being cut. He said he was extremely lucky to be making it out alive. His wife was able to arrange for funds to be transferred. The hospital refused to treat him until unlimited bank card funds was forthcoming. His entire neck and throat had suffered deep widespread massive lacerations from ear to ear. He was finally stable enough to fly home for reconstructive surgery, his hospital bill was $20.000 Now you must wonder why they would think chain link protruding all along a quad race in a particularly unmarked dangerous sharp turn would be considered adequate fencing, instead of hay stacks for example, that are common in mexico.
Perhaps the tour operators and hotels get a kick back from accidents that land someone with a hefty hospital bill. You really have to wonder. But the truth is, there are several hospitals in Cabo, they are all making money.
After years and countless accidents to tourists being "bumped" or carved up by propellors of panga boats while swimming,snorkeling and diving, it finally took a local mexican to die for the city to finally make an intelligent long overdue decision and install safety bouees for safe swimming at Pelican rock a famous diving spot near Lovers beach. About 2 months ago, a young 23 year old local diving instructor (he leaves a young wife and daughter) was caught in the propellor of the boat he was diving from as he came up to surface ahead of the diving group that was still below. The diving boat driver was obviously not using any thinking capacity, or why else would he turn on the engine when divers are below? The diving group who noticed a massive amount of blood over the water were convinced there had been a shark attack and refused to surface for a long time. The real sharks are standing on 2 legs.
We witnessed first hand so many close calls, i used to be infuriated with the total lack of concern, care or intelligence on the part of panga operators, as if its the job of the swimmer to just get out of the way, keep away from their engines. I always keep my eyes on the drivers let them know in this non verbal way, i'm watching them, and also keep an eye and warn swimmers if need be. The law is very simple in Mexico. Don't get hit by a mexican or don't hit one. The result is the same. Remember, the tourist /gringo is always at fault.
How many people who were reported to have had a heart attack while snorkeling or even diving have been in fact hit in the head by a panga filled with tourists.
I know this happened to a woman who was unconscious for quite a while and was extremely lucky to have survived. No one wanted to be held responsable so they looked the other way for several minutes. This local diver wanted to pull the woman who was just floating head down with her snorkel mask still on, tried to rescue this woman, but was told by his boat captain not to "that if she died he would be held responsible" and they would be the ones questioned by the police. Later the woman had no idea what happened to her, but having heard the story from the man who first noticed her, it was quite obvious to him that the panga boats are responsible for hitting and ramming into snorkelers.
Just a couple of weeks after the horrible death of the young diver, my boyfriend was himself almost hit while snorkeling by the engine of a boat which was shurned abruptly in reverse only a few feet away from him the driver not paying any attention. Being an expert swimmer and surfer, and very alert and wary of the boats, he was able to maneuver and swim quickly out of the way in the nick of time but he feels certain anyone else would have met their demise. At last, this area which is a fish sanctuary is now finally safe to enjoy swimming in again. Now its one of the most beautiful and enjoyable part of Cabo. It only cost a few hundred dollars to cordon off the area, now its a no kill zone for everyone. Each time I go there, I pray for the people who had to die or were wounded to bring awareness and make it safer for all of us.
The Riu in Cabo has hired a couple lifeguards on the beach, who seem friendly athletic and knowledgeable about the ocean, but its simply not sufficient and none of the other hotels have anyone. I have personally witnessed terrible accidents when people get on and off panga boats if a wave comes and it doesn't seem to cause the driver any concern. I've seen and heard people getting caught under the boat, twirling up in the air and falling backwards and breaking their neck. It doesn't seem to cause the driver any concern though. There is an eerie casualness and oblivious devil may care attitude. local wave runners drivers are similarly completely and utterly missing any "cautious" element. I have heard loose statistics of about 12 to 20 accidents a month in Cabo involving tourists, but it's hard to know. There has been an attempt to get the wave runners from landing on the beach and instead to have them dock on a barge some distance from the beach.But it is being fought by local beach business jet skis hit stand up paddlers, walkers and each other. The beach boys that run the wave runners back and forth are constantly jousting and showing off, spraying each other and tourists, thinking its cute when they are totally rude and slamming up as fast as they can onto the beach. Now it's like crossing a street filled with wave runners. They'll manufacture it like you got in their way. Please be cautious when maneuvering motorized vehicles around other people. Even mexicans are ashamed of the way other mexicans feel about foreigners. On the plus side, Cabo attracts mexican people who prefer peace and want to stay away from the drug violence that permeates much of Mexico and which many mexicans themselves are a target.
There are two types of mexicans, the kind mexican, who will do whatever he can to help anyone, and the other who sees tourists as an opportunity to make money off of him and is jealous of him so he feels entitled to whatever foreigners have. They are pretty good at gaging how much they can extort and squeeze from tourists. I would recommend anyone traveling to Cabo, to contact management when they notice anything unsafe in and around the hotel.
They will try to attend to it and this act will most likely save a life.
Please everyone check the balconies, not just out of the rooms but all through out hotels and condos, be aware they are made for very short people or not to obstruct the view, and are not considered a barrier, they are extremely dangerous. How many people need to fall off balconies to their death, how many preventable deaths ruled as suicide where someone fell backwards accidentally. These low ledge balconies have literally ruin the lives of so many people witnessed of those freak accidents.
Many people are injured and killed on roads in Mexico. Mexicans are lousy drivers, but when the police comes, its always the foreigners responsibility. I would be particularly careful on the highway from San Jose del Cabo to Cabo itself. Other roads have received major improvements in the last 2 years. Watch out for large blue taxi cab vans, they seem to have calmed down a bit, but they are known to be very aggressive drivers, are hand in glove with the police so if they hit you, its always your fault. if you argue about it, the police threatens you with jail time. If you were driving, you must pay for yours and their repair... oh and you need to pay for any police that gets involved. If you're renting a car though, you will be insured and covered.(Ask if the insurance is full coverage)
If you encounter a serious situation at your hotel, demand to speak to english speaking management, i have heard that there are many files of complaints filed by foreigners with the city. If enough complaints keep coming in regards to a particular individual then they will do something about him, these complaints have made a small but noticeable difference here. The city has cracked down on federales who were camped on the highway going to the airport extorting money from tourists They would stop the leaving tourist for any reason and demand money or hold them. Most people just paid and even accepted to be escorted to the airport and pay the police through the ATM.
Always demand to be taken to the station and even argue and demand the name of the police. So many complained that now they have cracked down. The news you get are not from reports you read about, there is really no reporting done. You find things out bits here and there, not easy to come by. Georges Noory from Coast to Coast the radio show was almost kidnapped/mugged in Cabo on his way back to the airport a couple of years back, as he was leaving the hotel he had been staying at. He knew something was wrong because the cab driver was so nervous and kept using his cell phone.
Georges, jumped out of the cab when it slowed down, grabbed his luggage that happened to be next to him, and forced a motorist to stop just in time as 2 cars attempted to block his cab. He jumped into a local motorist car who was kind enough to drive him to the airport.
At bars, it's not the booze thats tainted with drugs its the very glass itself, so maybe its safest to drink from an unopened bottle,tell them you want to open it yourself. Most bar places are safe here though, they are many good and safe restaurants.
You have to be aware in Mexico, things may be left jagging from the ground or large yuccas could be right next to the side walk. Locals don't seem to get hurt but some tourists do when they are out drinking and not watching where they walk. Watch out for holes on the streets and very uneven sidewalks, and sometime huge pot holes if you're driving, although they have been doing major road upgrades.
Last but not least, watch those waves, they are very unpredictable and please ask safety questions to staff you deem intelligent. Ask questions about the ocean right in front of your hotel or where it's safer to swim.
You may even ask around, just in case, for the name of a really good local doctor who makes home visits and have that name and number on hand...just in case. I've turned down many invitations to travel to mainland. Baja is overall a lot safer and trying on certain fronts to improve customer relations. its Mexico last chance.
Accidents happen anywhere in the world, but the main difference in a culture is how a foreigner is treated when something goes terribly wrong. Mexico has a very long way to go to redeem itself. Nature and weather is what has kept us here so far, accompanied with a great deal of caution and awareness.

I'm only writing you, because I have very helpful information about the time share industry and how perhaps shining a light on this fact might help people to be more educated or protected. I'll give you one fact, one that confuses the heck out of me, until I researched it legally. I practiced law in the states and was blown away by the deceit. There are GIANT time share companies, many are based out of Mexico, Europe, south America,,etc...but the odd fact is, all of them have ghosts or skeleton offices in the Orlando area. These offices are there as a Nevada based "shell corp" might be to those who wish to evade taxes. Having these ghosts offices, addresses, allows this industry to protect itself and screw over all clients who invest in time share. Nevada does a mighty injustice to tax payers in America, but why are other countries now using American based corporate addresses to avoid liabilities and accountability? I work with all of these resort now, in the software industry, so I've seen how it works and it's disturbing. Message: Let me first express my condolences for the loss of your son in Mexico, you certainly have the right to be concerned about violence in Mexico.
I am a Canadian and have lived most of my life overseas working in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and even the US. I have lived the past two years in Mexico. My job, before Mexico, actually put me in touch with Canadians that have experienced problems and violence and I can say that the vast majority of those that got themselves into trouble did so by being involved in activities that normal travelers would steer clear of, drugs, pornography or just fraud.
I can't comment on the US citizens on your list as I have only paid attention to the Canadian victims here in Mexico. Looking back over the past year there was the case of the woman from Calgary who was severely beaten in her hotel, a terrible incident for sure but being naked in an elevator at 3 in the morning in any resort town is a dangerous move and cannot be attributed just to Mexico. The BC man murdered in his house, again a terrible incident but challenging a burglar with a gun is a mistake in any country. The Canadian found in the trunk of his car in Acapulco, his business was dealing with criminals and shady officials, his demise could have been predicted. The Canadian gunned down in Acapulco, a known drug dealer. The Canadian recently killed in the Starbucks in Nuevo Vallarta, a known gangster from BC.
Canadians come to Mexico because of the weather and the fact that it is cheap. Resort towns anywhere in the world attract those that would prey on tourists so extra precautions are of course necessary. Expecting that a developing country is going to have comparable emergency services is foolish, expecting that their building codes are up to par with the developed world falls in the same category. You get what you pay for.
I am sorry to say that in Canada consular issues involving Canadians become political opportunities for the opposition to complain about the level of support provided to Canadians abroad. The newspapers print headlines about another poor Canadian in trouble in Mexico and how wonderful that individual was. There is very little follow-up when it turns out that the individual was dealing with questionable persons thereby leaving people to believe that it is a Mexico problem only.
There are plenty of problems and problem areas in Mexico but travelers who heed consular warnings and exercise a normal degree of caution are at no greater risk that tourists to New York, Washington or Detroit. I have felt more unsafe walking the streets of large US cities.
Certainly there is a need to warn people about travel to Mexico but including people on your list of victims that are criminals or have acted in a manner that would get them in trouble in any city in the US or Canada, in my view detracts from the credibility of the website.
Again, my condolences, I am only looking for a sense of balance in the website.

This is a quote from a young man I met while babysitting for a wealthy family in Greens Farms Connecticut 30 years ago! The young man who said it had nearly lost a leg due to the negligence and apathy of the Mexican medical authorities in charge of him. His father had to hire a bodyguard to steal him out of the hospital and fly him by emergency helicopter to Texas for treatment then on New York for surgery. I feel for the ones affected by loss, and anyone who has known tragedy due to this so called vacation destination. Please let everyone know, though, that not being able to leave without medical expenses paid is "standard operating procedure" in most countries. While rapes, muggings, police shakedowns, unsafe pools, etc are harder to protect against, a simple travel insurance policy from an independent travel insurance company (not a tour operator such as Apple) will fully pay medical expenses and also give you medical evac - out of the country. Simply put: learn from these accounts and don't leave home without travel insurance. Tragically, it wouldn't have saved Nolan, who died when not treated in time...but will help those who find themselves hospitalized with substandard care and demands for payment prior to treatment.

The past and the most recent news from Cancun, Mexico absolutely scares me to death! Message: i am an american and i happen to work in mexico. i am very private and the reality is that i am in constant danger of being kidnapped or murdered or who knows. so i am very careful in mexico. the riu hotel is a spanish chain and known as an expensive top resort in mazatlan, the riu had a horrific situation just this last 30 days. I have had some mexican friends tell me how their valuables where stolen from their rooms. so not only americans but also mexican nationals are targeted by criminals. the other odd situation is that at the mazatlan riu, someone in management decided to allow outsiders to pay 150 pesos to enter and use the pool facility. that itself breaches any security of the hotel. anyone can simply pay the 150 pesos and go in and look around for their next victim. having been in mexico for over 4 years i hear things and since i look latino, people tend to tell me things they would not tell a white looking american. example: during the spring breaks. the mexican locals look forward to these events and go out looking to get lucky with an american female. that means in whatever way possible. spiking their drinks, separating them from their friends etc. everyone in the bar knows the locals and know what they do. and they look at it as a game. there are a hand full of stories about people falling from their hotels, that part is a little true the old hotels construction was made short that you could by mistake lean over and simply fall over. there are plenty of robberies at the hotels these are done by friends of the people that work at these so called 4 or 5 star resorts. even rapes can occur at these hotels by the so called security personal. these things happen but no one takes responsibility. neither management or any law enforcement agency in Mexico. they look at it as a big game with the simple thought of "oh it happen to you" "oh well, at least it did not happen to me or my family" the situation of SGT. Joseph Bitet, seems to me that it was a planned robbery but not by 1 individual. the group probably had someone in the bar as a look out for their victim they probably had a room provided by an employee of the resort and was led to that room. Mr Bitet being a military officer with hand to hand combat skills was surprised by these group of men wanting to rob him and in the process they threw him over the ledge of the window or hall way at the hotel. it might sound very dumb for me to make that suggestion but in mexico people will kill for 200 dollars. i have to point out that there could have been 2 victims. if they had gone into Mr. Bitet's hotel room. why would anyone throw someone over the balcony????? because many others have been killed/murdered in the same way and no one ever investigates. the resorts simply call it an accident maybe there was a small % of people that actually fell but there are the % of those people that were murdered in that way so all the criminals in mexico know that they can do the same thing to their victims. It is such a shame and the big problem in mexico is the so called generation 5,000 pesos per month. thats over 40% of the population that makes that per month and in turn they look for ways to get ahead by stealing or doing fraud or anything they can think of .i have been in mexico too long to hear the various situations that happen to people just to rob them. if the riu hotel chain realizes that their mexican management and employees are doing whatever they want, maybe having to settle a lawsuit will make them understand financially that their customers should be protected and the loss of 1 man/women is not acceptable. god bless.

Our much loved minister and his wife took a last minute vacation there after the Christmas rush. Bus drivers were and perhaps still are unregulated, and when theirs pulled out to pass on a slippery road on the way to see the pyramids, the bus went off the road, crashed into a light standard, which toppled on them and incinerated some of them. Message: just yesterday news broke of a Canadian woman severely beaten in a 5-star Mexican resort in Mazatlan. Every bone in her face was broken. Canadians have been being killed and hurt in Mexico for a long time now. in 2010 there was an explosion at another all inclusive resort in which 5 Canadians were killed. It was due to natural gas and the hotel being built in a way that was illegal. the hotel authorities also stopped ambulances from getting to the resort because of feared bad press. Message: The problem of crime and its cover up is not confined to the resorts on the coast. I recently visited the Lake Chapala area, which is inland, near Guadalajara. There are many Canadian and American ex-pats retiring there. Everyone connected with protecting property values is covering up the extent of crime, which includes home break ins accompanied by murder. Realtors and home owners call the place "paradise" in spite of the growing rate of murders and drug cartel activity. There is censorship. Some of the Internet forums in the area delete news about the crimes. Gringos who speak up about it are scorned and shunned. Journalists throughout Mexico are killed for reporting cartel crimes. A Canadian couple brings down prospective home buyers for "educational" programs that encourage buying a home by telling one everything one needs to know about relocating to the area - except that the crime rate is as high as it it. They get a referral fee when their clients buy a house. Maybe they are all tanked up on delusions, remembering how safe the area used to be, if it ever really was. Or maybe some of them just don't mind betraying the trust of fellow gringos who rely on them for guidance about relocating to Mexico. I feel disgusted by it.

Message: I think I can answer Cheryle's question about why people go there. Mexico does offer a great vacation for the cost. They have more all-inclusive at reasonable rates than anywhere else and the airfares have been reasonable. That being said, I cannot believe that people send their most precious commodity--their children--into the middle of a drug war zone. The cartels are everywhere not just in the border towns. But an even bigger concern statistically is their healthcare and police issues if something were to happen. Most of the vacation resorts are located in small towns where the medical care is not great to their citizens so don't expect anything better than the service that they get. I am a Mexican Citizen and I have been living in the US for 23+ years and I know the difference first hand, when I take my two sons on vacation I NEVER go to any vacation resort that is mostly directed to tourists, the people there all they want is your money and they will do anything and everything to get it one way or another. If my sons want to go to the beach I take them to Puerto Vallarta where they have bigger hospitals and real doctors or I take them to Veracruz where is not a tourist trap but a nice place to visit without the worries of getting ripped off. Many people think that the vacation resorts are the safest, well they're not that's where you get ripped off the e most, specially in all those popular vacation spots. Mexico like any other place has their good and bad parts, if you look for a tourist targeted part of mexico expect the unexpected and it's a sure thing that you will get ripped off, if you want to go to mexico pick a non-tourist place, get health insurance before you leave and don't expect to be treated like royalty in Mexico to them you are just a piggy bank.

We embarked on a bus ride to a beach as part of our excursion. The bus traveled down a very long road and did so at an alarming rate of speed. All of the tourists were looking at each other and were very uncomfortable and somewhat frightened. I think the bus driver had to speed to avoid potential criminal activity. Most resort areas are in small towns and don't have the resources of a large city. EMT's here are rarely trained and it's wrong to even call them an EMT. There are excellent hospitals and care in large cities. I'm shocked that people expect hospitals here to take the US health insurance. You need to use this site to educate people on what Mexico has and doesn't have. I'm just so shocked that people would even travel to Acapulco. It's one of the most dangerous areas here. This is not the US and why people think they will get the same service here as they would in the US is unbelievable. Don't they ever question why the trip is so cheap? On the other hand, an area like Puerto Vallarta has world class hospitals and people receive very good care, but don't expect all the doctors to speak English. Please use this site to also inform people what to expect in Mexico and different areas of the country. People here are not trained as you would expect in the US. A lifeguard is not trained. People who help someone medically are at risk of being charged with murder should the person die. Message: I am so sorry for the loss of these young people. After having been on several cruises to the Riviera Maya area, my husband and I were contemplating a family vacation to the resorts. Your site has certainly given me pause for thought. Unfortunately, Mexico is very much behind the times and this isn't a secret but I think it’s good to reiterate to others that you can't expect the same treatment there that you would here in the US. there are very different cultural ideals and standards and the resources are simply subpar.

Message: I watched the Sun Jan 30th CBS documentary on Mexico. I work for a large Crown Corp of which hundreds of coworkers frequent Mexico, and insist "it's not like that where we go" .. "and that Mayan Riveira is safe".

Message: I agree that if we are going to send our money in Mexico, the Mexican authorities need to step up and protect those who are bringing them all these tourism dollars that would cripple them if Mexico was boycotted but on the other hand, we should also look at educating our young on International travel perils. I have been to Meexico 5 times to date since 2003 and have never had any issues what so ever, but I have seen onevery trip how very poorly behaved Canadians and Americans can be when they get to Mexico. Make no mistake, Mexico is a dangerous place but knowing that ahead of time, don't go there and get falling over drunk to where you cannot protect yourself, never leave your friends alone, and do not talk down to the locals. The reason I write to you is when I traveled in Mexico with my 2 kids and wife I was astounded at the number of building code violations. Message: I am outraged by your loss and the circumstances, I am so sorry. They also use rubbing alcohol in the margaritas and as "shots" and an ounce of that can blind you. It can really mess you up. It is cheap too. A friend of mine was slammed into a window in tj and the federales said "it was YOUR body that broke it, you have to pay now, or go to TJ jail for (whatever the time frame was)"...
They also rush up to you put a blanket or shawl on you to try to get you to buy it, but then they knock something over and make you pay for it, saying you did it with the blanket. I have heard that one numerous times. I was walking in tj with a friend of mine a 6 federales jumped out of a truck and surrounded us and wanted to take me away (I'm female) and I could understand their spanish, and I started SCREAMINGGG!! and they left me alone, and took my friend put him in the truck, and I just walked back to the parking lot where his car was an sat there for about an hr and a half. Then he came walking up with no shoes. They took him behind a building, took all his money and his shoes and let him go. They told me they had to take him because he was walking in proximity to a know drug dealer, and they pointed at someone across the street down the way...
Also, a friend of a friend was walking with a person and the federales jumped out of a van and said "you were masturbating in public" and took him away... (he was not)...
I have heard numerous stories of how women are raped and then the doctors at the hospitals rape them too. They are morally bankrupt humans.

I used to go to Mexico often; I was usually drawn by the great beaches, good food, and fun night life. Ten years ago it wasn't as bad as it is today. Now I prefer to go to places like Cuba or the Dominican... I even felt safer in Colombia than in Mexico...
In general Mexicans are a bunch of lazy opportunists who would sell out their own family members to make a fast buck.

We live in Baja Mexico and have (knock on wood) so far had no events that would test the goodwill or medical expertise of our friends and neighbors. Your stories have reminded me that we've been very lucky, and reinforced the imperative to be very careful in all our activities and relations with the local population. We have seen nothing but kindness among the people we know, but if worse came to worst, the fact is we don't know what would happen. It's definitely a different country here, and it's important that all visitors (short or long-term) understand that one's safety is one's own responsibility--and if that fails, things don't work the same way they do at home. Hope you get the word out. At the same time, informed tourists should have no trouble discerning that many, many places in Mexico remain the vacation paradise they see advertised. Carefully review hotel policies, talking in person to hotel staff if necessary, asking specifically about medical training for on-site personnel (if you're worried about that). Find out for yourself beforehand where the nearest best hospital is, and demand that you be taken there if it becomes necessary. Learn enough Spanish to communicate with people and make your wishes/worries known at the earliest sign of trouble. As in many things, a "carefree" vacation is just advertising. You always have to take care of yourself. If events conspire to make that impossible, perhaps the planning that you do before vacation will help.

Message: I was supposed to travel to Mexico in December and stay till Jan 2011. I was going to a WEDDDING in Guadalajara, and then on to P/V for the New Year Holiday- I have now decided to NOT GO. This is why- I frequently travel to Laredo, TX and the walk over to N. Laredo. In the last 7 months alone- south Texas has become a ARMED CAMP! This is no joke- police, ICE, and border patrol are everywhere! The slightest thing gets you stopped and searched or interviewed by law enforcement. I work out and so they think I am going to buy steroids-so I get stopped all the time. Yesterday, I was stopped by ICE because I had "baggie" camo shorts on. Once they found out I was a retired Police officer they LECUTURED ME about the dangers ALL OVER MEXICO. The final word is "The Mexican Government has lost all control." This is clear by an article in the Laredo paper which stated they are using "explosives" to attack and kill the Mexican police and army now. This was clear by the Mexican army in full on battle gear. Then you read about the missing and dead tourist-then you read about how "corrupt" the government is-then you listen to the border patrols statements-No I am staying in America- maybe go to a safer place-LIKE Baghdad or Afghanistan

Message: I think you should try to get in touch with the family of Mickey Goodwin in Texas.. he drowned at some Caribe resort in mexico Tuesday. My friend was there.. and told me there were NOT red flags... there was not a lifeguard on the beach. The sky did get dark, but there was no one there... once he went under... went he came back up his body bobbed in the water.. drifting further and further while people tried to get some net to get him. FINALLY a hotel worker ran out of the restaurant and swam out, pulling his lifeless body back. Just like your other stories, there were no trained personnel at the hotel. A guest who knew cpr performed it until the paramedics came (around a half hour). I am a member of the media, and really can't give more info about me... but when she told me, this site immediately came to mind... when I googled it, I see his name and that he "drowned off of a Cancun beach despite red flags warning of dangerous waters" Just investigate this.. again maybe he does take some blame (not to blame him...but he was drinking so maybe not in the best state of mind" but THAT is precisely why medical staff and lifeguards should be present... Message: VOSH -- (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) is a non profit organization which travels the world setting up eye camps. In our organization, there are 38 state chapters, 16 student chapters and 13 international chapters examining the poor and providing free eye-wear. Our Minnesota Chapter of 20 doctors and support people are planning to travel to Mazatlan, Mexico and then traveling to the village of Teacapan where we will be working January 8th through the 15th 2011.
Hour host group, the Lions club will put us up in Mazatlan the first night and we will travel by day to Teacapan to do our volunteer charitable work and stay at the local hotel. Even though we have traveled the world and with all the travel advisories for Americans not to travel to foreign countries, as far as I know there has not been any major issues with any of our chapters and their travels.
Is there any issue or problem that you know of in that area or what precaution should we take. Hire armed guards to travel with us? Notify the Mexican Government of our mission? Or any other suggestion you might have. Is Mexico so violent to Americans that our whole organization should cancel all charitable missions the country of Mexico?

While accidents can happen anywhere...please, please purchase good travel insurance before you or your family goes to Mexico. I was feeling very conflicted about Mexico as the actual statistics do not sound that bad and our son is studying Spanish but it sounds like the Mexican authorities skew the stats by falsely representing how tourists have died if they get reported at all. It is frightening that even the tourist town newspapers and police play along with the fantasy reports. I was awake last night with a strong feeling that it would not be wise to take the kids to Mexico even though Oaxaca sounds very beautiful and cultural with Mayan ruins and a colonial town.
Your email confirms to me that it is not a good choice at this time and I am looking into changing our travel plans to Costa Rica.

My wife and I have traveled to Mexico eight times now, and yes you are correct people need to be aware that Mexico is not the US. People need to research their vacations, be responsible for themselves, (maybe hard for some used to the gov't making all their decisions for them) use due caution and pay attention when traveling anywhere, especially outside the US. Excessive alcohol intake should be avoided also. FYI something new for this year from the Akumal CEA Lionfish are becoming more numerous along the coast of Riviera Maya (main danger poison fins) watch where you walk and while snorkeling don’t touch fish, of course these two hints are common sense.

Message: I feel saddened by the loss of all these people that I’ve read their stories on. yes its true, Mexico has turned into corrupt place, but it is not the only place people have been injured in or have died in. some of these deaths have been accidental. Travelers should be careful anywhere they travel. in 2005 I vacationed in Jamaica and my friend, her older sister and myself fell off the banana boat into the ocean. My friends sister injured herself fracturing her clavicle, the staff in our hotel were not much help and would not assist us. the night before we were assaulted and if it wasn't for one of the locals, I don't know what would have happened to us. What my point is, is that Mexico should not be the only country to blame. Maybe this website should be changed to vacation awareness only instead of just attacking one country. That’s my personal opinion. I've been living in Mexico for 3 months with my young son, and have already experienced a pool with dangerous suction, that caused me pain, and would definitely have trapped my son's hand or foot. My boyfriend, son, and I have also been robbed, and laughed at by the police. We have traveled extensively on all seven continents and are not marshmallows, but our worst experience of all of these places has been Mexico. I am an attorney with degrees from Dartmouth and Columbia Law, and would like to do something to help. I think that if people research Mexican vacations on Amazon and find a book about these risks and the callous indifference of the Mexican officials, it might have a substantial impact. We live in Tucson and read about of border violence and what spills over in to our state on a daily basis. The last time we visited the border-Nogales-was almost two years ago, as friend wanted to say he had visited Mexico. I am from Mexico and it is very to know that the people there don't have a care in the world for one another. These tragedies don't happen to just tourist but to the people that live there as well.. Children don't have the proper medical care and elderly people are left in the cold when it comes to health care. American people are very blessed to have hospital and people who train and study to save lives. Because in Mexico there is none of that. There is no such thing as a maternity ward or emergency room. It is very sad. In July of 2007 my grandpa was taken to the hospital alive and he never came home with us. The doctors never told us what happened. They never had an explanation and my mother is certain that they left him to die. To think of him going through such pain and not one person held his hand while he passed tears me apart.

Message: Please keep pressure on the U.S. State Dept. Travel Warnings on Mexico. In 2008, I sailed Royal Caribbean, and I went ashore in Cozumel, Mexico. I stopped in a souvenir shop, and a Mexican worker accused me of breaking one of the souvenirs. I told her that I didn't break any souvenirs. She called the Mexican police on me. The Mexican police threaten to take me to court before a judge. Other American customers on the cruise ship came to my defense. I agreed to pay half the cost for the souvenir. If there is a broken souvenir, the owner will deduct the cost from the Mexican worker paycheck. The Mexican workers wait until Americans come into the store, and accuses the American tourists of breaking the souvenirs.
If the tourists don't pay for the souvenirs, the Mexican worker will call the police on the tourist. The Mexican police will take the tourist to court before the judge. If the tourist goes before the judge, the tourist will pay 5 times more than what the souvenirs was worth.

Message: Hi. I just read Nolan's story and all the others and I am deeply sad for your loss. I know losing a loved one is never easy, especially to situations that could have easily been prevented. My best friend and I had our Cancun trip booked for February 18-23 (we would've just been coming back). But we had to cancel b/c my best friend fractured her pelvic bone snowboarding in Big Bear, CA. Well, we were nonetheless disappointed but figured, hey, maybe it's a sign that we weren't supposed to go for some odd reason. Then I started hearing on the local radio stations here (in Las Vegas) that there were numerous advisory warnings for spring break travelers about going to Cancun. Then I did further research and found your website. I was and still am shocked! I never knew any of this was happening, much less in a popular tourist area. I am now thankful that my best friend and I didn't go. It was perhaps indeed a sign! What I suggest is maybe listing ALL the resorts on your site, and then kind of like how Trip Advisor and Apple does, list each incident that has happened at that resort so it could easily be viewed and the warning easily displayed. It could even be rated like how those sites use their 4 star or 5 apple ratings. Perhaps you can put skull and bone ratings. I know this may sound devious, but who cares! They obviously don't care about American travelers so why should we care about their feelings?

Message: I was sick to my stomach after reading about the Nolan family tragedy. What kind of monster would stand by and not administer help to a young man and let him die.
My daughter and I were planning to go to Mexico for medical treatment this week. The facility is in Rosarito Beach but our hotel on an isolated highway. I had to press the patient coordinator for the right address so I could research the hotel location. I called the hotel and found it has a 30% occupancy since the rise in gang wars in Mexico. I also was told that Rosarito Beach is "perfectly safe but later researched the web and found the hotels and beaches are void of tourists.
I would like to believe the best in people but getting straight answers about my trip was hard.

Message: I came across this website through a link from ANOTHER article on violence in Mexico. A lot of the stories seem to surround vacationing in Cancun. I recently came back from Cancun, and after reading all these stories, I’m sadly NOT surprised on what people have written, or what has been written on other websites about crime and violence in Mexico. Mexico is an absolutely beautiful country, with a diverse culture. But unfortunately, crime is prevalent throughout the country and this is not caused simply by the growth or offshoot of drug violence among drug cartels, it is caused by a lack of respect and/or disregard for human life, poverty and low wages, weak laws and the unwillingness of the government and police to enforce all laws, all the time. Add to the mix a history of corruption by the police with low salaries and some indifference to “Gringos” and foreigners. Many people say that crime can happen anywhere, anytime. That is absolutely true. The difference with Mexico compared to other vacation destinations, given the factors I’ve listed above, is that your chances of being a victim of crime or horrible circumstance are substantially higher. From a personal standpoint, Mexico is just plain dangerous.I have served in the military and I have traveled to Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, and Mexico City. I would like to offer some tips, if you feel the need to absolutely vacation in Mexico:
1. Everything looks wonderful on the Internet: Hotels, Resorts, Beaches, Night Clubs, etc. Travel and Hotel websites, local Tourist Boards, will not tell you the dark side of their operations or any information on crime, do some research before you book a hotel.
2. Consider booking with a hotel chain that has a worldwide presence and reputation. It may cost more, but their overall standards and security may be better than a local or lesser known establishment.
3. Travel in groups, always. It may be tiresome to drag an entire group everywhere but you will be less likely to be accosted by criminals and business owners trying to nag you into buying something as you are sightseeing or window shopping. Also, never let someone from the group go anywhere alone, even back to the hotel room because they forgot something or they want to walk along the beach at night. A bonus is if someone in the group knows CPR and basic first aid.
4. Don’t draw attention to yourself. Keep the flashy jewelry, wads of cash, and extra charge/credit cards at home. If you need cash, most hotels will have an ATM or will let you draw cash at the front desk. Also, ask for small bills. If you become the victim of theft, the person reaching into your wallet or purse will feel what appears to be a lot of cash and will be more likely to leave you and the scene of the crime quickly. A majority of businesses also accept credit cards, consider using those also. Consider keeping one credit card and/or travelers cheques secretly hidden in one of your suitcases back at the hotel.
5. Keep quiet. People will always want to know where you’re from, and will probably already you are from the U.S. or Canada when they hear you speak English (or the native tongue of your country). However, don’t disclose more about yourself than necessary. For example: when you have arrived or when you are departing, what kind of work you do, what your plans for the day are, don’t even say you’re lost. It can be very easy to get lost in a different city, if you can’t obtain a clear map of a city try to get a good tourist map. It will have all the landmarks and points of interest on it and you can work your way back to the hotel or from where you started from.
6. Beware of your surroundings - all the time. Who’s following you, who’s out of place, what doesn’t seem or appear right. Gut feelings are usually right!
7. Visit the U.S. State Department for the latest travel advisory and take the time to complete the Travel Registration section. Before you leave the U.S., make a photocopy of your passport and drivers license and leave them with some your trust or they can be easily found. Should anything happen or you have a problem, the photocopies provide specific information about you that can be forwarded to the authorities.
8. Fight Back? My advice is do whatever you need to do to save your life even if that means fighting back OR not fighting back. But is fighting back or escalating a situation worth the 100 pesos in your pocket? Probably not.

Message: I am from Mexico. First of all I have to say that I feel really sorry for what the families on these stories have experienced. I felt really angry about it and sad because I know it's true. The southeast of Mexico is the poorest region of the country. People have very little education (if
any) so I wouldn't count on a hotel employee to give first aid to someone needing it. What I would recommend, if you decide to travel to Mexico, is to buy private medical insurance. Don't waste your time asking for an ambulance or looking for a doctor. Just call the emergency number of your company and they will send you a private ambulance and take you to a private hospital.
That's your best bet. Even I that live here have never used public hospitals in my life (I have heard horror stories). Following your common sense and being aware that you are not in the first world, you could really enjoy your trip to Mexico. My deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones.

I have a personal connection with five deaths in Baja and could not confirm them until I found your link to the Department of State website. Although that information is not 100% accurate, at least it is there and they did happen. I am sure that these deaths were also publicized in the local Mexican newspapers, but searching them is next to impossible.
There are several competing interests which are at odds in the tourist business. You have the vendors who are doing the best that they can to provide a service, make a buck and continue to live in the community. Although it may seem unregulated, bad news does affect business. The police do investigate and sometimes vendors go to jail for multiple abuses. The police have their own political issues they have to abide by; theft, traffic, tourists, locals, the gringo community, their bosses, drugs, guns, training, on & on. And, priorities seem to change weekly.
The medical community can be great as long as you don't have an emergency. And, the police investigation may take priority over accident response. Hence, the reluctance of bystanders to assist in life saving techniques, especially when hospital response is extremely slow.
Firefighters: they are poorly trained, paid & equipped volunteers. In fact, the place I stay counts on neighbors and buckets. And, the hospital is three hours away if the car starts.
In Baja you have the opportunity to enjoy 2000 miles of largely unregulated coastline. You can fly down the 1000's of miles of dirt roads at triple digit speeds. And yes, you can drink yourself into a moron if you desire.
Just remember, official help is almost non-existent. And, if you are in a tourist area, first responders are more likely to be thieves & rapists than other parts of the country.
The risks are greater and the rewards can be bountiful. Be vigilant, use a lot of common sense and enjoy your vacation.
I was going to recommend that you should separate out the drug & gangster deaths from the safety related deaths involving bonifide tourist activities. Although they seem unrelated, it would be difficult to differentiate even though regional problems seem to stand out. You might like to add something on traffic awareness. Their highway habits are much different from USofA.

During this weekend, I heard of another Canadian death in Cabo San Lucas, last Thursday night. I read the stories of the people that sadly passed away in the country and i have to say that although it little helps I am deeply sorry for all those sad cases and give all my moral support to the families of those people.
I knew about some of those cases because before i came to canada i was working as a tour guide in cancun so of course i got to know about some of those sad cases. Although it hurts i have to admit that many people working in the hospitality industry in mexico are people with no professional preparation and in most cases they learned on the way, the work the way they think it is right. They join the industry because it offers easy jobs. That is something that people like us with professional preparation in the industry have to deal with, working with improvised people that may have no passion for the industry. I love my country of course and still think that is a country worth visiting, but i love it with my eyes opened, It's nice when people tell me they visited the country and had a great time, but it's important to be aware of all these situations, I really think there should be a change in the way the run hospitality in the country, it should be given more importance and respect. I want to encourage people to go to mexico not by selling a wonderland but by selling what it is, wherever you go, you always have to know the truth about what's going on there, i wanna make sure just like you, that the people that visit the country have a great time.

My main point comment would be that the lack of humane support for tourists in Mexico and their resorts is due to a deep seeded and embedded hatred for Americans in general, but most especially, white Americans.
The best advice you could give anyone on this site is simply to boycott Mexico and Mexican resorts. The only thing that will 'wake them up' is a jolt to their bottom line.
