We have just returned from a trip to an all inclusive resort in Mexico, it was the Iberostar Perisio Del Mar in Riviera Maya. My wife and I were there with our two sons who are seventeen and nineteen. On our second night into the trip we left the beach at 4:00 p.m. to head back to our rooms to get ready for dinner. Our 19 year old said he was going to the pool for a little then would go back to the room to get ready. He was away from us for two hours. When he didn't return my wife and other son went to look for him and found him in the swim up bar pool and he appeared to be extremely drunk. On the other hand, the people he was with were not at all intoxicated in the slightest. They told my wife he can stay, just leave him. She had him get out of the pool and walked him back to the room. At first we chalked it up to nineteen and inexperienced at drinking. But as the next few hours went by we quickly realized that this was something possibly more. We contemplated ta king him to the hospital, but decided on sitting watch by his side all through the night instead, with the understanding that if things worsened we could always take him to the hospital. My son arrived back at the room at 6:00 pm and passed out almost immediately. A couple of hours later he began to throw up with his family at his side making sure he did not choke. At 3:00 am he woke up and tried to move around which was almost impossible due to him not being able to stand on his own very well, plus he was very combative which is not his normal self. We managed to get him back into bed, and he woke up at 6:00 am confused. At that time it seemed to have passed. At this time my son was able to communicate and had absolutely no recollection of the night before. After questioning him more he told us that he remembers around 5:00 p.m. a few people he had just met at the bar asked if he wanted to try a drink which included three separate parts. One being tequila, the second he wasn't sure of, and the third was tomato juice. After the third drink he could only remember a minute or two then said he woke up remembering nothing in between. He said it was like he just blinked. We are not naïve parents and knew he was going to drink because of the legal age being 18 but the timing and being in that state for 12 hours didn't add up. One thing is that we had only left him at the pool for a short time, and he was completely fine when we left him. When we got him back to the room we also notice that his pupils were extremely dilated which we thought was strange. One other thing that raised concern was that the bartender and others were commenting on how expensive his camera looked to them. We did not think much more of it at the time until we got home and the news started to break about the resorts in Mexico with the alcohol. Now we firmly believe that my son was a victim, and that we were extremely lucky to have gone back to the pool when we did to get him. Please be aware if you plan on going to any of these resorts in Mexico!
